5 Taking on New Tasks is Invigorating Allan Quinton, Board Chair hen I ask my grandchildren to assist me with some task, so often the response I get is that "It is too hard", or "I can't do that", and they try to get out of helping me. Then after some begging, cajoling, or bribery they finally agree to do it, and are amazed at how easy or fun it was. Too often in life we are the same way. Each new task that we are assigned, whether it is at work or home, we have the same response: it is too hard. Our usual gut reaction to the new or unexpected challenge is to minimize our ability to accomplish it and fall back on excuses rather than meet it head on. We might feel we could do it but really don't want the challenge that it presents to us. How different our lives would be if everyone had a positive attitude and a willingness to tackle every task proposed to them. We might not accomplish everything, but the feeling that you get by taking on such a task would be thoroughly invigorating. The opportunity for personal development in self esteem and knowledge in these circumstances is tremendous. Every year the staff at the Lethbridge Public Library take on such challenges, as they demonstrate with all the projects they complete and programs they offer. Numerous times throughout the year, Library staff step up, put their own trepidation behind them, and develop excellent programs and events such as The Word On The Street. This past year the Main Branch of the Library has also been dealing with major renovations that were started a while back and are now in the final stages. During this time Library staff had to relocate all the collections, move offices, and open new entrances. All the while making your Library experience the best it could be. Now that was, and is, taking a challenge and changing it into a success. This year we again have the opportunity to take on new goals and try new challenges. Each one that we take on is proof of our abilities and gives a strong boost to our self esteem. Each time we take on a new project or challenge we grow, and that gives us the strength to take on even more challenges. Make this year the year you take on something new, whether it be a project at work, a home renovation project, or a volunteer opportunity. Take a step outside your comfort zone and challenge yourself to something new. Find that part of yourself that wants to grow and find out what you are capable of accomplishing. As an added benefit, we have staff willing to assist you in any way they can. Let us all step up to meet the challenges offered to us, and by doing so improve our lives and our communities.
