General 2019 November/December Happening 3 One hundred years of public library service in Lethbridge is a major milestone, and we at the Lethbridge Public Library wanted to make this year of celebration a big one! Throughout 2019 we've been able to celebrate with our community through a wide variety of programs, events and services which included: • Special authors and speakers, including: Gwynne Dyer, Eden Robinson, Andrea Beck, Fred Penner, Daniel Handler (aka Lemony Snicket), and Elizabeth Smart; • 100 th Anniversary Big Birthday Bash, which included performers and activities for the whole family, and free barbecues at the Main and The Crossings branches; • 100 Years of Connecting Community exhibit, in partnership with the Galt Museum, and included displays at Park Place Mall and City Hall; • Announcement of an Indigenous art installation in Piitoyiss (Eagles' Nest) by the City of Lethbridge Public Art Committee; • Writer in Residence, Danika Stone; • Letters for Lethbridge, which is intended to capture the stories of those who live, work and visit Lethbridge; • No fee Library memberships throughout 2019! However, the year is not over yet! Throughout November and December there is still time to get your no fee Library card and to attend some great programs and events. Up-to-date information is always available on the Library's website at lethlib.ca. Don't forget, December 1 is the deadline to submit your Lethbridge story for Letters for Lethbridge. This program is the Library's version of a time capsule. We are collecting YOUR stories about Lethbridge to be vetted by a team of story experts–including our Writer in Residence. Selected stories will be included in the Letters for Lethbridge anthology to be available on the shelves at Lethbridge Public Library, and for sale for a limited time. Authors whose stories are selected for inclusion will receive a complimentary copy of the book, and be forever part of the history of Lethbridge! Full details on how to submit your story are available at lethlib.ca. Looking Back at 100 Years by Terra Plato, CEO, Lethbridge Public Library This exhibit features portraits of women by 15 female artists, and showcases work from the Alberta Foundation for the Arts' permanent collection that spans several decades (1947 to 2015). The motivation behind the female focus came from a 2017 Canadian Art magazine article on gender diversity within Canadian galleries and museums. Consider the following statistics: women constitute 63 per cent of living artists in Canada, but in 2012, only 36 per cent of exhibits were solo female, compared to 64 per cent solo male. This exhibit not only highlights the conceptual strength and facility each work conveys, it also celebrates the vast scope of femininity and the female psyche through the eyes of women. Artists include Helen Mackie, Marion Nicoll, Bev Pike, Ruth Syme, Dana Shukster, Jill Thomson, Maureen Harvey, Megan Dickie, Allyson Glenn, Carolyn Campbell, Dana Holst, Petra Malá Miller, Harley (Megan) Morman, Tammy Salzl, and Allison Tunis.
